PROJECT
BUILDING A BOAT IS A JOB THAT REQUIRES THAT YOU WEAR YOUR WORST CLOTHES EVERYDAY, THAT YOU BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK AND LEAVE YOUR CELL PHONE AT HOME

NAVY YARD PROJECT 2007
Currently we are building a 50 ft. Searunner catamaran at the Navy Yard Revitalization Project www.NOISETTESC.com. The project is aimed at developing the design of our mobile boat shop, increasing our knowledge of the innovations at hand and helping to promote the overall success of this urban revitalization.
The Mobile Boat Shop is an idea that will allow us to pack up our entire warehouse for relocation to other port cities and coastal areas around the world. The warehouse structure itself is a giant tent with removable metal poles and a large tarp cover. Our sanding systems are mobile, dustless, vacuum sanders that allow us to contain some of the dust that is created in the process of building a large sailing vessel. Most of the tools including circular saws, jigsaws, a chop-saw and even a planer are cordless 24 volt. This allows us to work with them anywhere in the shop without having to plug-in. Our power source for all other tools is supplied by a 12,000 watt generator that has been converted to run off of natural gas. This “cleaner” energy source is certainly not renewable, but it is a step in the right direction. The dual purpose utility of shipping containers, has also come in handy. Shipping containers serve as our wood and tool storage facilities. They are also used to store the entire contents of the shop in the event that it needs to be moved. In this way, the entire shop can be packed up in two days and moved either by truck or by ship. Our long term goal is to teach the trade of boat building without being tied to any particular place. The Mobile Boat Shop has opened up opportunities to travel abroad with our tools and accumulated knowledge under one roof.
Innovation-The current project will be undertaking a significant amount of research to find a renewable material for use in marine grade plywood. The laboratory testing of “Airheart” and other alternatives to tropical hardwood will eventually yield a new and exciting way to construct boats. The expense of testing and the staggering amount of paper shuffling is being shouldered by members of the Lost Trades team. Other less known innovations will be researched, such as hemp fiberglass and high strength/ high U.V. resistant epoxies. Epoxy fasteners have only one weakness: direct sunlight. U.V. resistant epoxies exist and are used to repair sculptures and other such artwork of antiquity, but a vitamin E sized capsule of this glue costs so much, that it would hurt your feelings if you saw the pice tag. Engines are the other aspect of our boats that present an opportunity to break out of the box and away from convention. Diesel engines could, of course, be made to run off of bio-deisel or vegetable oil, but we are looking for something much more cutting edge. The Scuderi engine is our best find so far, but we are not certain that the conversion will be possible for marine applications.

Success of the Navy Yard Project- The Noisette Company is pioneering an “Urban Green Revitalization” on the grounds of the former US Navy Base in Charleston S.C. This effort is one that incorporates community, artisans and an “Urban Alliance.” It is being called “The New American City.” Our boat will be built in the future site of a multi-use Maritime Center. There are plans for a marina, waterfront park and a museum to house the famous Civil War submarine “Hunley.” The ambitious nature of the undertaking and the scale of this “Urban Alliance” has attracted many creative companies and individuals. Clemson University and its partners have recently acquired 80 acres to build a research facility, which will create up to 3000 jobs on the grounds of the former Navy Base. The American College of Building Arts has recently started a campus on site and is presently teaching key skills for the restoration of historic buildings. Artisans, sculptors and a wide spectrum of creative people have come to take part in the action. As boat builders we represent both the trade knowledge of our craft and the entrepreneurial challenge of keeping it alive. Our goal is to create projects that are meaningful and educationally charged. New ideas are on the horizon. Various large scale transport vessels are on the drawing-board and many new opportunities are emerging in adventure travel. By pioneering the use of “Miracle Fiber W” (wood) with new liquid joinery and composite techniques we have achieved amazing results in boat construction. This, coupled with the eco-travel industry provides the demand for responsibly built eco-craft and environmental savvy dwellings. Many of the techniques that we practice would not have been possible 20 years ago. Most of these innovations have come about through the use of lightweight-plywood-composites (see Greenhorn Apprenticeship). The Noisette Urban Alliance gives all creative people an example and a way to be involved or inspired. “The New American City” will be, at the very least, a place to dream and an avenue to connect ambition to action. The Noisette Company has what they call a “triple bottom line: people-planet-prosperity, doing what is socially just, environmentally sound and economically practical.” Please visit their site and learn more.
